From the 14th of October until the 21st is World Down Syndrome Awareness week.
Raphaela my eldest daughter has Down Syndrome, she turns 4 in just under two weeks.
Since she was a tiny baby we have called her a Diva, she's blessed us with endless joy and endless attitude!
She required open heart surgery when she was just 5 weeks old, but she bounced back beautifully from that (Big thanks to Dr Pohlner & Staff at Brisbane's Prince Charles Hospital) & hasn't looked back.
Now at nearly four she does everything and more that any "un-enhanced" child would do.
She starts Kindy in 3 days, loves Fimbles, Bananas in Pyjamas & her Poppy, she loves playgroup and dancing and her temper is almost as bad as her mummy's.
Less and less children with Down Syndrome are being born into our society, due higher rates of prenatal detection and ignorance about what its really like to live with this Syndrome.
We are losing a whole generation of Raphaela's peers because of fear and misinformation.
The world is not a better place with this practice of modern "eugenics".

You know I have told you how you have changed my perception on children and 'life' in general, with down syndrome. I was so ignorant until I met you and your girl ~ she is just so beautiful and I am so glad to be able to spend time with her (not you though :P).
You and Beau should be so very proud ~ not just of your children but of yourselves.

It has been a lovely journey watching Raph grow from the most beautiful baby into a gorgeous girl.
I agree with V Eden, whilst you are proud of your girl you should also be proud of yourself, you have shown maturity and wisdom beyond your years, you have challenged all the misinformation and pre-conceptions, but most importantly you have loved, nurtured and raised a unique individual(even if she does have a bit of a temper LOL).
Take a big bow girlfriend.
PS. Can you imagine the dynamic duo (Raph and Kara) in years to come, my my, I am giggling already, so hope I am around to see it.
Poppy has seen pictures and gone into meltdown!! Give her the biggest kiss and hug from Grandma and Poppy-Poppy said and the other two!! My other comment didn't show up(missing in action),no doubt some computer glitch-wouldn't be my fault!!! BTW NOBODY has a temper as bad as yours-or even close. HAHA. Luv Mum.
You are both an inspiration! You have given the Diva everything any little Diva could want :) I am sure she is as proud of your as you of her!

i didnt even think this little angel had DS i was amazed at how beautiful she was... i had to do a project for school on DS and she was the main picture in my project.. i told every body how beautiful she was and that she is just like us....and guess what! I GOT AN A PLUS 100!!!! she is so so so sso sssssoooo gorgeous and i hope she lives a long happy beautiful life........ god she is beautiful........

Your little girl is an angel. And you as well for knowing how important it is to imform people on the reality of this disease and let them know that it isn't a reason to take away your child's life. I see that your child has done just fine with that. I pray that when I have my own, my child turns out as wonderful as your own and that I can be as amazingly intelligent as you are.
